AITA for asking my dad to be more considerate about his breakfast?

Somnath Gandotra, April 28, 2026

i live with my parents, and i’m not the only sibling who still does. we live in a very expensive area so i don’t have much choice, and i also have a child. our home is run like a community, and we all work together to help it run.

my dad eats a lot of tinned fish, primarily sardines, and no one else in my family likes fish. it’s fine that he eats these, and i even enjoy making crafts with the leftover tins. but usually when he eats these, he eats them pretty quickly and the smell doesn’t usually linger.

but this morning, i woke up and the first thing i smelled was sardines. i spent a few minutes with my daughter, i picked an outfit for her to wear to school (including at least five minutes of searching for a matching sock), and was up for at least fifteen minutes total before i went to make coffee. the entire time, the house smelled like sardines. he had left the tin open, unfinished, and sitting right in front of the coffee maker.

when he entered the kitchen, i asked him “can you please get your fish out of here?” and he blew up. he accused me of “criticizing his breakfast”, and said i should be grateful that he doesn’t bring up my unfinished chores (i told him that actually, they were done, so no need, and when i havent done them, he doesn’t usually hesitate to tell me anyway) or places that i fall short. i even told him that i didn’t care if he ate the stuff. my problem was with it sitting out, because now it stinks when people are trying to make breakfast, but he kept doubling down so i just walked away.

i ended up crying in my room for a little while. i don’t really understand how what i said made him say all these other things. i could have put it nicer i guess, but it was said lightheartedly, and didn’t feel any different than when we all get upset at him for farting all damn day. he used to have anger issues, but has done a LOT of personal work the last few years. he’s genuinely come a long way and is very different from when he raised me. it really only slips out occasionally when he’s in a really bad mood, so i texted my mom to ask what his problem was, and she said he had been in a good mood all morning.

i try really hard to make sure im pulling my weight around here. i cook dinner for everybody every night, i vacuum, i clean up after my daughter and i, and we keep a garden full of things that feed us. i’m not perfect, but he doesn’t usually throw that in my face. there have never been any issues about the arrangement, so it really felt like he was grasping at anything he could say to make me feel bad. was what i said about his breakfast really that hurtful? aita?
